Mary Brawner has held scientific leadership and discovery roles for major pharmaceutical companies and run her own innovation consulting firm serving both established and early stage clients. She recently accepted a position as Business Capability Director for Discovery Automation for the Genomics and Biologics Groups of a major global pharmaceutical company (BMS).
How did you learn about Kelleher Associates for Career Transition services?
I learned about Kelleher Associates from my Financial Advisor, Gregory Sarian, who has sent other clients to Kelleher and was very complimentary about their services.
What sold you on using Kelleher Associates for your Career Transition services?
I was impressed with their knowledge of transition challenges, their connections within the Philadelphia Life Sciences community, and the positive attitude they brought to the search process.
What Kelleher services and methodologies proved to be especially valuable during your search?
I was really helped by going through the PARS (Problem-Action-Results) process with Mitch Wienick who was my coach. As a scientist, I found it difficult to relate my experiences to “business value” descriptors. Mitch was able to pick out business value themes within my PARS which enabled me, with his help, to create a very compelling resume.
Did the fact that you have a very sophisticated scientific background create any barriers or problems in working with Kelleher Associates?
No. I think Mitch enjoyed learning about my scientific background and expertise and we really got pretty deep into my accomplishments. This process was very helpful to me in crafting the narratives and success stories for my interviews.
What was the most frustrating part of your search and how did Kelleher Associates help you get through the rough patches?
I originally targeted small biotechs. My search did not immediately identify biotechs who were able to use my expertise. Anne Robson, another Kelleher Associate, connected me to the PA Bio group which did value my background and helped put my search into a higher gear.
Toward the end of your search you had a number of key interviews followed by a compensation negotiation process. How did Kelleher Associates help you manage each element of the process and help you keep focused and at your best?
Mitch and I discussed each interview to identify themes for thank you emails and any issues I needed to address. We also discussed potential Q&A’s and what answers would be most effective when I responded.
I really appreciated his ability to keep me grounded after I was told BMS was preparing an offer. While they were incommunicado, Mitch kept me focused on my value to BMS and helped me draft very thoughtful communications to the hiring executive (my boss to be) and HR that conveyed my continuing interest while gathering intelligence on where the company was in the offer process. He also helped me think through and negotiate the key elements of the offer.
What did you like best about working with Kelleher Associates?
Mitch – from my perspective he is a brilliant business strategist and a wonderful person. What were some of your key learnings during your search process, and what would you recommend to others seeking their next position?
You really need to know who you are and how to translate that into value you can create for potential employers.
Would you recommend Kelleher Associates to others and why?
Absolutely! My former colleagues tell me I am the only person among all of us to have landed a full time, high value role in a large pharma organization. I attribute that to Kelleher’s ability to help me describe my accomplishments in a very compelling way and link that to my ability to bring value to my future employer. |

Mars Susas has accepted the position of VP-Business Development and Strategy at NRG Energy. This Fortune 500 and S&P 500 Company owns and operates one of the country’s largest and most diverse power generation portfolios and has ~2 million electricity customers.
How did you come to choose Kelleher Associates for your recent transition?
I was presented with a few options during my transition and after talking to some former colleagues I was concerned with the level of support I would receive from some of the national executive transition firms. I was looking for more of a personal approach to the search process.
Kelleher was recommended to me by a former manager, who is now a CEO of a building materials company. He described Kelleher as a local executive transition firm that offered a process that would be very helpful to anyone going through a transition and found that the coaches there offered personal support. It was exactly what I was looking for and it turned out to be a great decision.
We understand that you continued with an active consulting assignment while conducting your job search. What issues did that pose and what would you advise other job seekers trying to simultaneously manage these two activities?
The biggest issue is carving out enough time for the job search. I knew a search was going to look like another job, so it definitely felt like I was juggling several clients at once.
What worked for me was blocking specific days for search activities; it forced me to spend time on my job search and to finish any consulting assignments in their allotted time. I also made sure not to take on a full time consulting assignment, essentially prioritizing my search over any consulting work.
What was the most frustrating part of your search and how did you get through the rough patches?
The search process has many ups and downs; getting started was the toughest part for me. Early on I made a list of all the folks I wanted to contact. Jim Miller was very helpful by suggesting I look at it like any other business result by measuring my results. I started with measuring emails and phone calls. This transitioned to phone calls and coffee networking sessions. Finally, I started tracking interviews. I think focusing on the outputs helped drive me to keep pushing and keeping the “search funnel” full – which was a key part in finding the roles I did.

Melinda Decker recently started a new position as Director, Marketing – Commercial Innovation with MedImmune. With its cutting-edge biological products, MedImmune is a leader in scientific and medical progress.
Why did you choose Kelleher Associates for your recent transition?
I felt an outside perspective could be a valuable addition to my search process. I hoped that some of Kelleher’s connections could open doors and/or broaden my network in important ways. Although the expense was something I weighed carefully, I felt that if I could land a great opportunity sooner with professional help or if I could land a better opportunity than I would have otherwise, it would be very worthwhile. Kelleher received high marks from people I talked with and I was impressed when I met with them to discuss what they offered.
How valuable were the exploratory sessions when deciding which career path was best for you?
These sessions were helpful in providing focus to my search and shoring up my positioning and messaging. Additionally, they were helpful in assessing my job options and making timely decisions.
How useful did you find Kelleher Associates as a catalyst for networking and connecting you to people who were relevant to your search objectives?
This is a strength of the firm. I was working with Mitch Wienick and Tammy Beil. Mitch helped connect me to critical people with whom I had productive, insightful conversations about positions I was seeking, companies that represented quality targets, and other connections who could be helpful to me. Tammy helped me think through how I could best approach these new contacts. I am hopeful these new relationships will continue.

Tom Wellman is a senior financial executive who recently accepted a position as Chief Accounting Officer, Senior Vice President and Controller for Ports America in Phoenix, AZ. Ports America is the premier stevedoring company in the U.S.
What were your most challenging issues in looking for a new position after relocating from Hawaii to the Philadelphia area?
-
Identifying and getting introduced to target companies, regional recruiters and key networkers.
-
Coming from so far away, it was challenging to gain credibility in the local job market. Companies and people didn’t know me or my past employers and didn’t have a reason to work with me. Kelleher Associates helped me to gain credibility in a community that is very ‘local.’
-
Learning about the Mid-Atlantic business community.
-
Determining which companies would be both great to work for and a good cultural fit for me.
-
Settling into the job search routine after not having had to look for a job since college.
-
Staying motivated in the search.
You were open to a number of senior financial roles – Chief Financial Officer, Chief Accounting Officer and Controller, for example. How did you pick and choose the positions to pursue and was Kelleher helpful to you in making these selections?
My coach, Mitch Wienick, helped me evaluate my skills and experience, determine which types of roles would be most relevant to my background and interests, prioritize my goals, develop good marketing materials, research companies, screen opportunities, and build relationships with people that would not only help with the job search but that would be life-long friends.
You took advantage of Kelleher’s mock interview process which was recorded and constructively critiqued. How did this help you during your search process?
I thought my interview skills were very good before I did the mock interviews and the video interview. This was a wake-up call! While my basic communication skills were great, there were some glaring issues that came up that were easy to fix. Not only did the improved skills help me in the job search, but this was a great refresher for lazy habits formed over many years. I’ve used the communication skills that Mitch and Jim Miller discussed with me many times during my on-boarding. It was a good reminder that critical communication skills are important whether in a job search or in other life/business encounters.

Al Thorp is a senior financial executive with a unique combination of CFO and Segment CEO roles in various environments. He worked with Kelleher Associates all the way through the process of voluntarily leaving Globus Medical Products, where he was the CFO, to his position at Storeroom Solutions.
What were your most challenging issues in looking for a new position while you were employed in a very demanding role and how did Kelleher help you work through them?
The most challenging issue was time, not so much for the actual search, but the time spent having the face-to-face networking and interview meetings.
Another challenge was ageism. I found that prospective employers fell into one of 3 categories – those with a bias against gray hair, those with a bias in favor of gray hair and those with no bias, with the majority falling into one of the two extremes. While I did not pursue an active strategy to combat this circumstance, I sought companies (particularly private equity firms) that would have a favorable time frame pursuing liquidity issues that were commensurate with my situation and age.
You interviewed with a number of private equity firms who had portfolio company CFO positions. What were they looking for and was Kelleher helpful in addressing this part of the market?
Mitch was extremely helpful in reinforcing and displaying my strengths and skill set in a way that private equity firms would perceive as relevant.
What were the most difficult parts of the search process and how did Kelleher assist you in getting through them?
I perceived a general lack of respect and courtesy from employers and especially recruiting firms. Mitch’s response was “don’t take it personally - just keep going and stay focused”.

Kevin Moyer is a skilled operations and client service executive with expertise in annuity, life and mutual fund call center and back-office operations.
What is your background and new position?
My new position is Senior Vice President of Operations at the Corporate Call Center. Previously I did some consulting work for the LOMA organization, ran the customer service organization for the Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company, and prior had a similar role with Prudential Financial.
What did you like best about working with Kelleher Associates?
I appreciated their personalized service model. The one-on-one coaching definitely helped accelerate my job search.
You had prior experience with a national outplacement company before working with Kelleher. What were the key differences between the firms, from your perspective?
The service model of the other outplacement firm I used was more group-oriented. While there was some one-on-one support, the majority of the time was spent in networking groups with others. While that setting can be helpful, I felt that my time was much more productive with Kelleher’s individualized approach.

Bob Wilson has worked as a consumer products marketing and sales executive as well as a general manager in managed services. He recently accepted a position as the VP of Marketing for the North American division of a Swedish consumer products company.
How did you learn about Kelleher Associates?
I learned of Kelleher entirely by word of mouth at various networking events.
What Kelleher services and concepts proved to be especially valuable in your search?
Within the first 30 days I had an integrated communication platform that included a cover letter, elevator speech, networking profile and resume, all aligned with who I was and what I was looking to secure. I subsequently built this in to my LinkedIn profile and the response was tremendous.
For each opportunity in which I had an interest, my counselor, Mitch Wienick, provided 2 to 4 contacts directly or indirectly related to the position. This dramatically increased my probability of success by expanding my knowledge, over other candidates, of the business situation facing the prospective employer.
Mitch and I would talk through the employer’s business situation – what questions to anticipate and how to relate my skills and experience to the interview vetting process. This was especially valuable in boosting my comfort level and effectiveness during the interviews.

How did you find your way to Kelleher Associates?
I had heard from others that if you were in a career transition situation, and interested in staying in the Delaware Valley, Kelleher was THE firm to go to!
I was told their consultants and staff really understand the market and know how to help you position yourself effectively. Kelleher Associates has a reputation for providing strong content, customized for the individual. When I was referred to Kelleher by a good friend within the industry, I knew I would be assigned to a consultant who had real-life experience and business expertise.
You briefly worked with a national career transition firm before signing on with Kelleher Associates – what were the key differences between the firms, from your perspective?
I can only describe the differences as “night and day.” The national outplacement firm was like a factory, offering no holistic approach or customization, and advising only: “here are the steps; go do the steps.” I wasn’t even offered an opportunity to practice my interviewing skills when I was interviewing for a job. Simply put, they offered nothing to propel me forward, and they were not equipped to provide me with the resources I needed. To illustrate the difference, when this firm reviewed my resume, it came back to me with only a few comments, yet the same resume came back from Kelleher completely proofread and redlined, with powerful suggestions and improvement.
When I resolved to leave the national firm, I knew that I needed to work with Kelleher. My chief concern was that I would have to cover the cost myself. Also, Kelleher Associates worked with top executives, while I was still at the director level. But with Kelleher, I knew I would gain respect and my visibility in the market would be elevated, so I made the call. Mitch Wienick agreed to meet with me right away.

Tim is an innovative pharmaceutical executive with global experience in creating and executing information management strategies. Accomplished in all phases of the drug development process, he sought a leadership role at the intersection of science and information technology. Tim recently landed a position as head of library services at Merck.
How did you come to Kelleher Associates for your recent transition? My former employer provided me with outplacement services at another firm which proved disappointing. At an ExecuNet meeting I met Mitch Wienick and, after talking with him in depth about how Kelleher worked with its clients, subsequently decided to make the switch to Kelleher.
We understand your background involves a specialized niche. How did this impact your strategy? Despite the limited number of opportunities I felt I would be more successful in this current employment environment by searching for a similar position to the one I had at Wyeth.
You ultimately had more than one offer. What process did you utilize to determine the most appropriate position? This was difficult in that I was initially tempted to accept a position for which I was overqualified. I quickly realized it was not the right fit and determined to stay focused on positions that suited my professional experience and salary expectations. So, by being a bit more patient, which the Kelleher team helped me with, I was ultimately able to secure a much better position.

Thierry Denis could count multiple successes as a General Management executive when he came to Kelleher Associates. He was looking for a position in an international enterprise with a global role. Now in his new position as Director of Supply Chain and Sourcing for Owens Corning, Thierry enjoys a job that is tailor-made for his particular aspirations and abilities, in a corporate culture that is just right for him.
How did you learn about Kelleher Associates? When I worked for CertainTeed, in Valley Forge, PA, we used Kelleher Associates internally. I knew they were very professional and had a broad network of connections in Philadelphia. At a point where it was necessary to shop for an outplacement firm, I chose Kelleher Associates.
Can you share some of the process you went through with Kelleher?
Mitch Wienick was my coach. He is the ultimate professional, extremely meticulous, and very detailed. As an individual, he has very good advice and is expert at evaluating your situation. Although I had no new revelations about the outplacement process, Mitch was there when I needed someone to talk to about key meetings and interviews and he greatly added to my network.
In the beginning, Mitch wanted to take the time for a very thorough personal evaluation. I had gone through the outplacement process before and knew about 360° assessments, Myers-Briggs, and polishing resumes. I knew who I was and what I wanted to do, and it was hard to be patient. As their client, you want to go fast. The process feels like it is slowing you down, but it is not. The details are very necessary in refashioning and updating your personal value proposition.
