Keith Stauffer is a senior financial executive having held domestic and international leadership roles at Dell, Inc. and Procter & Gamble. Keith conducted his job search remotely from Texas with the specific goal of relocating to Pennsylvania and recently joined Hershey Foods in the role of Financial Director for the International Division.
Why did you leave Dell Computer? The primary reason was to be close to family and my origins. In conjunction with this, I felt it was a good point in time to make a career move, and capitalize on my experience, including my international assignments with Dell. At the time of the decision to reocate and change positions, I became aware of the challenges this presented and that it was unique to do so without a corporate relocation. How did you find Kelleher Associates and your coach, Mitch Wienick? To assist with networking in this remote situation, I joined ExecuNet. In one of their newsletters to members, CareerSmart Advisor, I read an article by Mitch Wienick, also a former Procter & Gamble employee. On a specially arranged trip to PA, we met in his King of Prussia area office and I immediately engaged him as my personal career coach. What impressed me most about Mitch was his industry knowledge and his ability to help me network at the upper level of organizations. How were you able to work effectively with Mitch, living in Austin, Texas, and Kelleher Associates in Wayne, PA?We initiated the coaching with several face to face meetings—this definitely facilitated the process. After that, we conducted our work together on the phone or via email. Mitch always made himself available to me. There were times when we needed to speak frequently and other times, less so. He was there whenever I needed him, even in the evening and on weekends. What was of the greatest value in the process?Mitch’s coaching, of course. Knowing that I had a sounding board gave me peace of mind. From simple to complex questions, he provided the answers and suggestions and offered real expertise. I gained real confidence in my ability to sell myself and insights into what my personal value proposition should be through his interview training. Additionally he provided top level contacts. In some cases, I would not have had the opportunity to network or conduct exploratory meetings without Mitch’s connection. Mitch was particularly instrumental in helping me navigate and negotiate at the final offer and acceptance phase of my search when I was juggling three separate offers. How were these generated and how did you decide to go with The Hershey Company? The first prospect, a company called Benco, in the dental supply distribution business, surfaced through CareerBuilder. The second opportunity resulted from my research and making direct contact with the CFO of Benco’s top customer, Dentsply. Finally, Hershey’s came through a boutique recruiter whom I had known at Procter & Gamble. This proved to be the best career choice in terms of short and long term opportunities, fit with my background, stability and culture of the company, and geography. What were the key lessons you learned during your search process?Having a high level career coach is genuinely an investment in your future. As you advance in your career, it becomes even more critical to have expert guidance. Mitch’s help was invaluable to me! And I plan to stay in contact with him and Kelleher Associates well into the future. |
