Kevin Moyer (2011) Print

Kevin Moyer is a skilled operations and client service executive with expertise in annuity, life and mutual fund call center and back-office operations.

What is your background and new position?
My new position is Senior Vice President of Operations at the Corporate Call Center.  Previously I did some consulting work for the LOMA organization, ran the customer service organization for the Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company, and prior had a similar role with Prudential Financial.

What did you like best about working with Kelleher Associates?
I appreciated their personalized service model.  The one-on-one coaching definitely helped accelerate my job search.

You had prior experience with a national outplacement company before working with Kelleher. What were the key differences between the firms, from your perspective?
The service model of the other outplacement firm I used was more group-oriented.  While there was some one-on-one support, the majority of the time was spent in networking groups with others.  While that setting can be helpful, I felt that my time was much more productive with Kelleher’s individualized approach.

What Kelleher services proved to be especially valuable during your search?
I had access to the professional network of not only my coach, but all of the other coaches there. Those high caliber connections were particularly invaluable.  I capitalized from the meaningful conversations with professionals who could provide an additional critique of my resume and elevator speech as well as inspire me with stories of their own career paths and “reinventions”.  One of the counselors I met with received a call the following day from someone looking for my exact qualifications and that call actually was the catalyst that yielded my current position.

What was the most frustrating part of your search and how did you get through the rough patches?
The most frustrating part of my search was the recurring “feast or famine scenario”.  I would have several very strong leads and then nothing.  The false sense of security that this created would deflate my confidence.  It is difficult being on a search in this economy, let alone when you have nothing in the pipeline.  Additionally, I grew tired of the slowness of the hiring process.  Even at times when I had solid connections, the process seemed to move at a snail’s pace.  When the supply is much greater than the demand, the company certainly does not have the same sense of urgency as the job seeker.  My counselor, Sandy Ford, gave me a tremendous boost during these times, as cheerleader and confidant.  She kept encouraging me that I was doing the right things and needed to remain vigilant and something would happen for me.

What were some of the key concepts learned during your search process, and what would you recommend to others seeking their next position or considering a change in career path?
First, I would tell others:  Keep your network alive. I understood this concept previously but I did not realize its true value.  Statistically speaking, we will all likely need to look for another position in the future.  Do not wait until this happens.  Play an active, forward-looking role now as you anticipate your next step.  Continue having conversations that maintain and expand your network and, look for opportunities to help others.

Second, the “hidden job market” is a real and proven existence.  My last 2 opportunities were never put on any web site or job board.  In my experience, job boards accounted for less than 10% of tangible leads for me – there is a published statistic that validates that for people doing an executive job search.  So, why then, is our tendency to spend so much time online looking at job boards?  My recommendation is to not spend 90% of your time that is only 10% effective.  Spend the time learning the skills of developing relationships.

Finally, be patient, tenacious and focused until you find the work you love.  Your passion speaks even louder than your qualifications across that interview table.

Would you recommend Kelleher Associates to others and why?
I would recommend Kelleher Associates because of the highly personalized model they use.  At Kelleher they challenged me to look at myself in a mirror and increase my effectiveness – even if it was initially outside my comfort zone.  You can have a great ‘package’, but they also teach you how to wrap it well.

Kelleher also promotes and provides access to interesting and supportive networking events, an important edge for any job seeker.
