What did you find most daunting about your job search?

The most daunting aspect of my job search was trying to keep a positive outlook while continuing to hear of more and more people in the food industry losing their jobs.  I had originally thought the food industry would be more isolated from the downturn, so keeping my spirits and optimism up while tuning out the negativity of those around me became a primary focus.

What did you find most helpful about the Kelleher experience?

What was most helpful about the Kelleher Associates experience was the structure of the process in-place. The firm’s SITUATION-ACTION-RESULT (SAR) method assisted me to focus on past career achievements in developing my resume and prepared me to have readily accessible, polished success stories when I interviewed.

Additionally, the initial assessment process – whereby Marci and I discussed my “likes” and “dislikes” in various working environments – was extremely helpful when evaluating job offers.  The process helped to keep me grounded and objectively evaluate every opportunity, so that I chose to pursue those that best matched my specific criteria and ideal work environment.

Finally, the networking opportunities presented by the firm were tremendously beneficial.

What tools, techniques, and tips did you obtain from Kelleher?

The number-one tool that I obtained from Kelleher Associates was learning how to develop and present my “elevator pitch” to prospective employers and the people with whom I was networking.  The creation of my networking profile, as well as technical assistance in the design of my resume and various cover letters, were also very helpful.  Finally, the firm’s tips for formal and informal networking – both in person and online via social media tools such as LinkedIn – were invaluable.

How did you position yourself in the marketplace?

Through working with Kelleher Associates, I developed the following positioning statement:

“Marie Read is an innovative, highly accomplished food retail marketing professional with 15 years category management and product development experience, as well as a strong background in retail sales development.”

What were some of the high points and low points of your search?

Each day of my search seemed to be a roller coaster ride – the highs and lows changing with each phone call I made or received.

What advice would you give to others looking for their next position?

I would advise others looking for their next position to remain positive and connect with as many people as possible.  Sometimes, the people you expect to help you the least turn out to be the most helpful.  I would also suggest connecting with a wide variety of people for the purposes of expanding your network – past colleagues, schoolmates, industry acquaintances and others.

People want to help.  You can make it easier for them to help by making specific requests of them when you network.  Ask them to help you connect with someone at a particular firm, provide insight into a company that you are interviewing with, or request feedback on your resume or networking profile, including the companies you are targeting.  Use tools like Linked In to their fullest potential – conducting research on companies and connections.

Would you recommend Kelleher Associates to others, and why?

Yes, I would definitely recommend Kelleher Associates to others.  My primary counselor, Marci Wilf, Esq., was a phenomenal resource who helped maintain my positive outlook throughout the search process and helped me objectively evaluate each and every opportunity that came my way.

What I enjoyed most about the firm is its structured approach and emphasis on uncovering networking opportunities.  In addition to Marci, I benefited from working with other Kelleher Associates career consultants, all of whom brought differing – and valuable – perspectives to my search.
