10 Misconceptions About Career Management Print
Thursday, 20 January 2005 19:00

Mitch Wienick’s presentation to Business Leaders Network on Jan. 21.

  1. I'm sitting in a terrific position and I don't need the help of a Career Management firm.
  2. All career management firms are the same so it makes no difference which ones I work with; and they're not worth what they charge anyway.
  3. Because I've been so successful and with my company for so long, I don't need to create a resume. And even if I needed one, I could dash it off pretty quickly -- after all, it's only a chronology of what I've done during my career.
  4. Because I'm an important executive and get paid to make decisions and call the shots, I don't need much advice or input from subordinates (especially those who have left my company), suppliers, professional services providers, and even customers, except on occasion, for business matters which directly benefit my firm.
  5. I'm too busy to join industry groups, professional organizations or trade groups, plus my employer would frown on my "wasting time" doing these things since they don't directly benefit the bottom line.
  6. I have such terrific access to everybody I need to speak with, meet with, and do business with that I feel very comfortable that this will continue no matter what I'm doing. I'm really pretty important.
  7. I have powerful skill sets which are easily transferable to other firms and industries and executives in those industries will recognize them almost immediately.
  8. I'm too busy to waste my time meeting with people who are looking for jobs; plus they have nothing to offer me. After all, I hold all the cards.
  9. Though I don't like my supervisor nor what I'm doing, I don't find my position satisfying, and I've grown stale professionally, I ought to stay put because my job is secure.
  10. I really prefer to hire people who are now in positions; executives who have been in outplacement or spent time with career management firms are clearly less capable than currently employed executives.
