Recharging your Career: The All-in-One Transition Resource for Lawyers

Sponsored by Kelleher Associates, LLC

The Lawyer Transition Group comprises legal management, career management and marketing professionals who collaborate to provide lawyers in transition with the pragmatic advice they need to move forward in their careers. With our collective insight into law firm, in-house, business and non-profit environments, we help lawyers who:

  • Are presently in career transition
  • Expect they may need to prepare for an upcoming transition
  • Are contemplating a potential transition into a new role, either within or outside the traditional legal practice arena.

By combining our skills, backgrounds, resources and knowledge of market conditions, we have developed a six-session program to provide lawyers with focused, effective, action-oriented guidance to help them successfully identify and achieve career goals, despite the challenging economic environment.

Curriculum

Beyond the basics of polishing a resume and learning better interviewing techniques, today’s lawyers must develop a more strategic and focused job search. “Recharging Your Career” starts with a rigorous assessment of each participant’s experiences, strengths and abilities. Each participant explores a range of possible career paths, leading to a broader set of opportunities. The six-session curriculum includes:

  • Session 1/April 22, 2010: Personal Assessment: understanding your values, personality and strengths, and their connection to optimal career choices and work environments. We will also briefly explore the market realities in the legal profession and their implications for future opportunities.
  • Session 2/April 29, 2010: Self and Market Definition: using your personal assessments to identify possible new roles and career paths; understanding your interests, strengths and skills and how they may be utilized in a variety of possible career options open to attorneys.
  • Session 3/May 6, 2010: Developing Personal Career Goals: small group coaching to help you define and prioritize your possible career options and develop a specific plan for pursuing each option. Also included is information regarding starting a solo practice.
  • Session 4/May 13, 2010: Marketing Yourself: individual one-on-one coaching sessions to develop targeted personal marketing materials for selected career goals, including a resume and networking profile. Also included is information on how to effectively work with recruiters.
  • Session 5/May 20, 2010: Getting Your Message Out: refining your resume and profile; developing a comfortable and persuasive way of promoting yourself; identifying your “network,” and improving your networking techniques.
  • Session 6/May 27, 2010: Interview Preparation and Reference Management: improving your interviewing skills; selecting and managing references; and committing yourself to a disciplined job search process.
